03 / HOW TO UNLOCK YOUR
How to unlock your PDF
Select the encrypted PDF file you want to unlock. The file can be up to 50 MB in size and up to 500 pages long. Then enter the password that you already know. You must also confirm that you are authorized to remove the protection from the file.
Upload the file, and the unlocking happens on our secure server. While the process runs, you will see the status change from uploading to queued to running, with a percentage showing progress. When it finishes, you can download the unlocked PDF.
04 / WHAT THIS TOOL DOE
What this tool does with your file
The file you upload goes to private object storage and is deleted after one hour if you are not signed in, or after seven days for a signed-in account. Before anything opens your file, it is scanned for malware, so an infected file never reaches the processing engine.
The file type is checked by reading the actual bytes, not by the file name. Renaming another type of file to .pdf will not get it through. If the file is not actually a PDF, it is rejected before any work starts.
The unlocking is done by the qpdf engine. After the file is processed, the resulting PDF is reopened and parsed to make sure it is valid. If the job silently produces something broken, it fails instead of handing you a bad file.
05 / WHAT THIS TOOL CAN
What this tool cannot do
This tool does not guess, crack, or break passwords. You must already know the password that was used to encrypt the PDF. If you have forgotten the password, this tool will not help, and there is no built-in recovery method.
Also, the file must actually be encrypted. If you upload a PDF that is not password-protected, the tool will refuse it rather than pass it through unchanged.
06 / WHAT IF THE RESULT
What if the result is wrong?
If the tool says the password is wrong, check that you have typed it correctly. Passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure you are using the right password for the file's owner password, not just a user password that may allow viewing but not editing.
If you are certain the password is correct but the file still fails, the file might be corrupted or the encryption might be unusual. Some PDF processing tools have trouble with certain encryption schemes. In that case, you could try a different PDF editor that also accepts a password to remove restrictions.
07 / ABOUT FILE FORMAT
About file format and limits
This tool processes PDF files only. The maximum file size is 50 MB, and the maximum number of pages is 500. If your file exceeds either limit, the tool will not process it.
There are no warning codes to explain. If the job fails, it is because the password is incorrect, the file is not a valid encrypted PDF, the file is too large, or the file is not a PDF in the first place.
FAQ
Common questions
Will unlocking a PDF reduce the quality?
No. Removing encryption does not recompress or alter the content. The PDF's pages, images, and text remain exactly the same. The only change is that the password protection is gone.
What file sizes and page counts are supported?
You can unlock PDFs up to 50 MB in size and up to 500 pages. If your PDF is larger or has more pages, the tool will not be able to process it.
I forgot the password. Can you break it?
No. This tool does not guess or crack passwords. You must supply the password you already know. If you have forgotten it, there is no way to recover it with this tool.
Why does it say my file is not encrypted?
The tool checks the actual file contents. If the PDF does not have any password protection, it is rejected because there is nothing to unlock. Perhaps the file was saved without a password or the security was already removed.
How do I know my file is safe during processing?
Your file is uploaded to private object storage and automatically deleted after one hour for anonymous users, or after seven days if you are signed in. That ensures your document is not kept longer than necessary.
Why does it say the password is incorrect even though I am sure it's right?
Double-check the spelling and capitalization. Passwords are case-sensitive. Also, make sure you are using the correct owner password, as some PDFs have both a user password and an owner password with different rights.
