PDF to Excel

If you have a PDF with tables and need them in a spreadsheet, this tool extracts the tables and writes them into real cells. The conversion happens on our servers, so you don't need to install software. It works with PDF files up to 50 MB and up to 200 pages.

03 / HOW TO CONVERT A P

How to Convert a PDF Table to Excel

To start, upload a single PDF file. You can select all pages or choose a specific page range in the options before converting. If you don't select pages, the conversion runs on every page in the PDF.

The conversion runs on our server after the file is uploaded, so you can close the tab or step away without interrupting the process. The page shows the job status – uploading, then queued, then running with a percentage – so you always know where the job stands.

Once the conversion finishes, the resulting Excel file is available for download. The file is also re-opened and parsed before it is offered, so if the conversion silently produced a broken file, the job fails rather than giving you a damaged spreadsheet.

04 / WHAT THE TABLE EXT

What the Table Extractor Does

Inside the tool, the table extractor analyzes the PDF for grid-like tables. Tables are detected based on column positions and then written into actual worksheet cells, so the output is structured data rather than a pile of text.

Because detection is based on column positions, it works well when the PDF has clear column boundaries. If a table has no visible borders, the extractor may not recognize it as a table. In that case, the tool returns a TABLES_HEURISTIC warning to let you know that detection relied on heuristics and borderless tables can be missed.

The layout is rebuilt from text positions to keep the order of data intact. In some cases, especially with complex or unusual layouts, the sheet may not match the original exactly. When that happens, you get a LAYOUT_APPROXIMATED warning, which tells you to check the output against the PDF.

05 / FILE AND PAGE LIMI

File and Page Limits

The PDF can be up to 50 megabytes and up to 200 pages. If you select more than 200 pages for one job, the tool refuses the selection. So if you have a larger document, split it into smaller PDFs before converting.

Only one file can be converted per job. There is no batch upload here; you upload a single PDF and get a single Excel workbook in return.

06 / SECURITY AND DATA

Security and Data Handling

Every uploaded file is scanned for malware before anything opens it, so an infected file never reaches the conversion engine. The file type is decided by reading the actual bytes, not by the file name – so renaming a non-PDF file to .pdf will not get it through. The file is rejected before any work starts if it is not what the tool expects.

The document is stored in private object storage while the job runs. If you are not signed in, the file is deleted after 1 hour. If you have a signed-in account, it is deleted after 7 days.

07 / HOW TO HANDLE WARN

How to Handle Warnings

The tool may return two warnings. The TABLES_HEURISTIC warning appears when tables are detected from column positions, which means borderless tables can be missed. If you see this, check whether the PDF includes tables without visible gridlines.

The LAYOUT_APPROXIMATED warning appears when the sheet is rebuilt from text positions and may not match the original exactly. In that case, open the Excel file and compare the data with the PDF. You may need to reorder rows or columns that ended up in unexpected places.

No other warning codes are generated. If you encounter a different message, it is not from this tool.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?

No. The tool reads text and table structure from the PDF's content. If your PDF is made of scanned images without an underlying text layer, there is nothing for the extractor to detect. It works best on digital, text-based PDFs.

Why did my table come out in the wrong order?

The extractor rebuilds the sheet from text positions to approximate the original layout. If the PDF has a complex or unusual layout, the order can be off. The LAYOUT_APPROXIMATED warning indicates this. Check the output against the PDF and rearrange manually if needed.

Why were some tables missed?

The TABLES_HEURISTIC warning means some tables may have been missed because they lacked clear column borders. Detection is based on column positions, so borderless tables are harder to catch. If your PDF has tables without gridlines, consider adding borders in the source PDF before converting.

Is there a limit on file size or number of pages?

The PDF can be up to 50 MB and up to 200 pages. If you select more than 200 pages for conversion, the tool refuses. For larger documents, split the PDF into 200-page chunks or smaller.

What does the pages setting mean?

The pages setting lets you choose which pages to convert. Leave it empty to convert all pages, or specify a page range to convert only selected pages. The selection must be 200 pages or fewer.

Why did my uploaded file get rejected?

The tool checks the actual file bytes, not the file name. If the file is not genuinely a PDF, it is rejected before any conversion starts. Also, the file is scanned for malware; if it is infected, it does not proceed.
