PDF to Word

Turn a PDF into a real Word document you can edit. Headings, paragraphs, and tables are extracted into a DOCX file with the layout approximated, so you get a solid starting point rather than an image of the page.

03 / HOW TO CONVERT PDF

How to convert PDF to Word

To start, upload a single PDF file. It can be up to 50 MB and 500 pages. Optionally, select a range of pages—leave the page setting empty to convert every page. The job runs on our server, so you don't need to install anything.

While the job runs, the page shows uploading, then queued, then running with a percentage. Once done, you can download the resulting DOCX file.

04 / WHAT YOU ACTUALLY

What you actually get: real, editable Word content

The output is not a picture of your PDF wrapped in a Word file. It is a true DOCX: headings become Word heading levels 1 to 4, bulleted and numbered lists become real Word lists, and tables become real Word tables. You can edit the text, change styles, and reuse content without retyping anything.

The layout is approximated. The tool reads where text sits on each page and reconstructs the structure from that. A heading is recognized by how it looks – its position, size, and style – not by any hidden marking in the PDF. As a result, an unusually formatted document can sometimes come out flat.

05 / HOW THE CONVERSION

How the conversion works internally

Once you upload your file, it is placed in private object storage. The file type is verified by reading its actual bytes, not by its name – renaming something to .pdf won't fool the system. If the file doesn't match what we expect, it is rejected before any processing starts.

The file is scanned for malware before it goes near any conversion engine, so an infected file never reaches the step that rebuilds the layout. That step – the layout reconstructor – uses the positions of text on the page to infer headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables.

06 / WHAT TO WATCH OUT

What to watch out for: tables and layout limits

Tables are detected from column positions. That means a table without visible borders may be missed. If a borderless table exists in your PDF, the converter might treat it as plain paragraphs, and the warning TABLES_HEURISTIC will appear.

Because the layout is approximate, you may see the warning LAYOUT_APPROXIMATED. This is normal and simply tells you that the document layout was rebuilt from text positions and may not match the original exactly. Always proofread the converted DOCX, especially if the source PDF has multi-column layouts, unusual fonts, or tightly wrapped text.

07 / YOUR PRIVACY AND F

Your privacy and file retention

Uploaded files are stored in private object storage. If you use the tool without signing in, your file is deleted after 1 hour. If you are signed in, it is deleted after 7 days. The produced DOCX is also covered by this deletion policy.

The produced file is re-opened and parsed before it is offered for download. If the conversion silently produced something broken, the job fails rather than handing you a corrupt file.

This means you can use the tool for sensitive documents, knowing they won't linger on our servers.

08 / TROUBLESHOOTING AN

Troubleshooting and tips for best results

If the converted Word document does not look right, first check for the warnings mentioned above. For borderless tables, add borders in the original PDF if possible. For layout issues, try converting a smaller range of pages to isolate the problem.

Remember, this tool converts text-based PDFs. If your PDF is actually a scanned image, the content is not text and cannot be extracted as editable text – you would need OCR, which this tool does not provide.

The conversion is designed for one file per job. If you have multiple PDFs, convert them one at a time.

FAQ

Common questions

Will I lose formatting when converting PDF to Word?

Since the layout is approximated, some differences are expected. Headings, lists, and tables are converted to real Word elements, but exact spacing and complex layouts may not match perfectly. The tool warns you with LAYOUT_APPROXIMATED when this might happen.

Is the converted DOCX a real Word file or an image?

It's a real DOCX file. Headings become Word heading levels, lists become actual Word lists, and tables become Word tables. You can edit the text and apply styles directly.

My PDF has a table without borders. Why isn't it recognized?

Tables are detected by column positions. Borderless tables can be missed because there are no lines to guide the detector. When this happens, you'll see the TABLES_HEURISTIC warning. Consider adding borders to the table in the PDF to improve detection.

What's the maximum file size I can upload?

The maximum file size is 50 MB, and the maximum number of pages is 500. If your PDF exceeds these limits, you'll need to split it into smaller parts.

How long are my files stored after conversion?

Anonymous users: the uploaded PDF is deleted after 1 hour. Signed-in users: after 7 days. The output DOCX is covered by the same deletion policy.

Why does my converted document look different from the original PDF?

The tool infers structure from text positions, so unusual layouts may come out flat or rearranged. Also, exact spacing is not preserved. Check for the LAYOUT_APPROXIMATED warning and manually adjust if needed.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

This tool works with text-based PDFs. If your PDF is a scanned image without a text layer, there is no text to extract, so the conversion won't produce editable content. You would need an OCR tool, which is not part of this converter.
